Listening skills - the forgotten skill

The art of listening is a foundation skill. Without this skill young people will not be able to engage with education, training or authority figures.

  • To respect others when they are
  • Understand how to listen in a focused way
  • Understand what it feels like to be listened to
  • Know how to improve personal listening skills
  • Know the benefits of listening without distractions

Motivation, values and respect

Motivation is a crucial concept and will underpin the desire to change. When we respect our values, and when our actions are in tune with our values we develop self-belief and a sense of purpose.

  • To have an understanding of what it means to be motivated
  • To understand values as the source of motivation
  • To identify personal values
  • To respect personal values
  • To respect the values of others
  • Motivation is important to succeed
  • Recognize motivation - how motivated people behave
  • Values are qualities you might look for in your best friend
  • Does my behaviour represent the values / qualities I want?
  • Honour and respect your own values and those of others
  • Your values are the foundation of creating excellence.

Assertiveness

We can be assertive when we have self belief. Lack of self-belief leads to disrespectful behaviour - for example, being aggressive, manipulative or bullying. Being assertive and having needs met is a right. Behaving positively and respecting others is a responsibility.

  • To develop self belief
  • To understand how negative beliefs impact on behaviour, performance and attitude.
  • You have a right to be assertive
  • Recognising personal behaviours that are assertive, aggressive or passive (eg interrupting others, smiling, swearing, crying, head down etc)
  • You can change your negative self beliefs
  • Positive thoughts are best
  • Beliefs can affect attitude, behaviour and performance
  • You can chose your beliefs about yourself
  • How you can use assertiveness to get what you want
